Grain Boundary

A real crystal is rarely one crystal. It nucleates in many places at once, and each seed grows its own lattice at its own angle. Where two grains meet, the rows of atoms can't line up — that mismatched seam is a grain boundary. The bigger the angle between two grains, the brighter and more defective the seam.
