Letter Anatomy

Every part of a letter has a name. The serif is its foot. The bowl is its interior chamber. The ear is the small projection on the lowercase g. Letters are not symbols — they are described objects, with vocabulary inherited from architecture and the human body.

Hover or tap a part of the letter R to learn its name. The letter is built from named regions, each one a deliberate decision by the type designer.
