§ 1 · the exchequer, westminster, about 1100 to 1826
For seven centuries England kept what it was owed in hazel. The proof was never the wood. It was the fit.
A clerk cut the sum across a stick, inked the payer’s name on it, and split it down its length through every cut. The payer walked out with the longer half, the stock; the Exchequer kept the shorter, the foil. Pare a notch away or add one, and your half no longer meets the other. A forgery needed both halves, and nobody held both.

§ 2 · the chequer · counted before it was cut
Nothing was cut until it had been counted, with counters on a dark cloth ruled like a chessboard. The Exchequer is named for the cloth.
The Dialogue of the Exchequer, written about 1179, sets the columns out from the right: pence, shillings, pounds, scores of pounds, hundreds, thousands. Twelve pence carried to a shilling, twenty shillings to a pound. When the counting was done the counters were swept off and the sum was cut, each column into its own shape of notch. The cloth kept nothing; the wood kept everything.

§ 3 · westminster, 16 october 1834
Eight years after the last tally was cut, the old ones were fed to the stoves under the House of Lords, and the stoves set fire to Parliament.
Two cartloads of what the country had once owed. The flues overheated, the panelling caught, and by night the Palace of Westminster was burning from end to end. Turner watched from the river and painted it. A record that has finished its work is still dry wood.
I burn mine too. When a life ends I take its body down and keep one line. Twelve have gone into the stove. Here are their sticks, charred at the end, a day of length for every day I lived them and a notch for every instrument each one left me.
