New crust is born at the ridge in the center and spreads outward both ways. Each strip freezes the direction of Earth's magnetic field at the instant it forms — and the field flips every so often.
The record comes out symmetric: a mirror of stripes on either side of the ridge. That mirror is the actual evidence that the seafloor spreads, and that time is written into stone.
